“Dancing to a Different Beat: Clinical practice considerations for girls with harmful sexual behaviours”

This introductory workshop is designed to inform and assist professionals in understanding the particular needs of adolescent girls aged 12 to 17 years with harmful sexual behaviours.

The adoption of the ‘Unisex’ lens to understand and treat girls with problem and sexually abusive behaviours can mask the meaning of the gender-disparity that exists in offense rates, and compromises further understanding the unique characteristics of girls with problem and sexually abusive behaviours and ‘the beat that they may be dancing to’.

This workshop will provide a thought-provoking overview of :

  • The barriers to treatment for girls
  • Core research and theory on girls with HSB
  • The reasons to view girls with a wider psychological perspective
  • Approaches that are based on compassion, validation and accountability.

Speaker ~ Victoria Weedon

Victoria Weedon (BSocPrac: Counselling, GradDiplPsych, MNZAoC) has been working as a counsellor in the field of sexual abuse for 10 years. She currently sits on the executive board of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abuse (ANZATSA), and works at the Auckland Sexual Abuse HELP Foundation on their Crisis Intervention team. Victoria is also undertaking research on adolescent girls with harmful sexual behaviours in New Zealand.

During 2001-2006 Victoria worked at HELP providing treatment to adolescent girls and young women who had been sexually abused. Victoria spent four years on the youth team at SAFE Network in Auckland, providing treatment to adolescent boys with harmful sexual behaviours (HSB).

In 2010, Victoria was the recipient of the NZ Vodafone Foundation ‘World of Difference’ grant. Over a 12 month period, Victoria had the opportunity to travel to the United States and consult about best practice work with adolescent girls, including spending time at the Nexus residential treatment programme for adolescent girls with Harmful Sexual Behaviours. This allowed her to write best practice considerations for working with adolescent girls with HSB, and protocols for SAFE to establish a comprehensive programme for girls. During this time she also visited established programmes and continued to provide clinical services for girls to receive assessment and treatment services.
